Ecco, who we met at the Yayorin base in PKB came today. A couple of the volunteers requested a couple of chickens to kill and eat. So he brought with him 5.
However, 2 died from stress of the 5 hour journey in a box with their legs tied together. And 1 was on its death bed anyway so they killed it. They threw that one away as they don't know what it died from. Like a piece of rubbish. God damn.
Tim and Barry killed the other 2. Glad I wasn't there to witness that. Apparently they did it too quick..Indonesians do it slowly and very painfully to drain the blood.
This whole ordeal didn't bother me as much as I thought it would. However, I do think it was quite unnecessary. I mean, how hard is it to go 4 weeks without meat? I wouldn't have minded it happening if these chickens had been running about freely until they were killed. But they were kept in tiny cages, legs tied together on what must have been a horrific journey for them. No one seemed thankful for the lives of them..no one said anything, they just ate. To me, there didn't seem to be any respect for these animals. I know thats the culture here though. But I duno..I don't know why I expected more from the volunteers..they just must have been pretty desperate for the meat.
Its a more real experience though. Its not done behind closed doors here. Tim said it made him think about how meat gets to his plate a bit more.
It was Yukas birthday..we made hats for the party!! Boone helped me make mine..and I won the competition! We then snacked a lot and I played lots of guitar with Ido.
We also got the stuff we ordered from town..SilverQueen chocolate...so good. Maria and I ended up with a massive bag of nuts.
